First day abandoned
NZPA Melbourne The first day of the New Zealand cricket team's four day match against Victoria at” the Melbourne Cricket Ground was abandoned yesterday without a ball being bowled. Officials called off yesterday's play just before the scheduled start after heavy
rain over the last three days had left the ground unfit. The wicket took some rain during the final stages of the Victoria-England match on Tuesday, and is still reportedly spongy although it has been covered since then. The match is now due to start at 1 a.m. (N.Z. time) today, and will be played over three days.
