Banking machines
Sir,—lt would appear to many that one of the most important technological changes that this society has to face is about to happen without any real concern from those who will be most affected — average New Zealanders — as automatic transaction machines are introduced into the banking and financial arenas of this society. As computers take over running various sectors of this society, people are about to be reduced to numbers, and as many of us know, numbers have no real say in the participation of life. While certain advantages can be made by using computers, what of the social cost of the introduction of this technology, as machines replace people. It will be interesting to see how these computers will manage and control people’s ability to spend, and to earn, as plastic money cards take over the cash and credit-worthiness of
every individual in this society.—Yours, etc., PETER W. KENNEDY. December 5, 1982.
