Rugby popularity
Sir, — I listened with interest on television to the statement by Mr Don that in spite of the Springbok tour rugby was more popular than ever as during , last season the number of spectators and gatetakings had increased all over the country. This, of course, was to be expected with the Australian team touring New Zealand. However, the attendances at the ordinary club games have fallen off considerably, Mr Don and the rugby union seem to bp more interested in making money out of rugby than in presenting the game itself. Too much dirty play has been allowed into the game, so much so that many clubs are finding it hard to recruit new members and I know many clubs have fewer teams playing now than they had a few years ago. This is a serious matter for the future of the game. — Yours, etc.,
C. H. CLEMENS, December 7, 1982.
