Many more New Zealanders will soon have readyaccess to cash round the clock from April next year. Automatic transaction machines (computer tellers) will be installed at shopping malls, airports, and other “high traffic" areas for customers of the Post Office Savings Bank, the Countrywide, Southern Cross, and Southland building societies, and the Broadlands and Marac finance companies. The first automatic transaction machines were introduced by the Northern Building Society, now part of the United Building Society. The Canterbury Savings Bank now has four a.t.m.s, with about 10 more to be introduced. The Bank of New Zealand and the A.N.Z. Bank have begun installing the machines, and the other trading banks have plans to introduce them. The latest group, however.

is the first to announce that it will have a.t.m.s at sites other than bank branches. The network will be run by Armourguard and Challenge Computers. A joint company. ATM Anytime, Ltd, has been set up to control the service. The chairman is Mr R. H. Pettigrew, deputy chairman and managing director of Freightways Holdings, Ltd, the parent company of Armourguard. The manager will be Mr P. D. Chamberlain. Holders of Anytime cards of the member institutions will be able to use the system. ' Initially, five different transactions will be possible on the automatic machines: the deposit and withdrawal of money; the transfer of funds from one account to another; the obtaining of information on the balances of all accounts of the cardholder; and requests for statements.
