Slow Wanganui wool sale

PA Wanganui The Wanganui wool sale became arduous for auctioneers yesterday as buyers were reluctant to start bidding at a reasonable figure. They mostly started bidding as much as 30c below the auctioneer’s opening figure, then slowly raised the figure in 1c and 2c bids. Several Wanganui brokers described the buyers’ performance as the slowest auction on record. Compared with the Auckland sale last Friday, the market was quoted as fleece unchanged, second-shear up to 2Vz per cent cheaper, and lambs’ wool up to 5 per cent cheaper.

The Wool Board gave support to the better-style and length crossbred fleece. It bid on 17 per cent and bought 5 per centCompetition generally was well spread, Eastern Europe predominating. The offering of 23,483 bales of new season’s wool was 27 per cent full-fleece ewe, 15 per cent hogget fleece, 48 per cent second-shear, 4 per cent new season’s lambs’ wool, plus the usual oddments. The wool was much lower yielding than is normal at this sale. Many lines were spoilt by poor shed preparation and were discounted. A number of lines were tender. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 253 c

a kilogram. Based on this, the Government supplementary payment was 26.4 per cent. The market indicator was 240c.Medium crossbred. 44/48s.
