Indonesia wants top cows

NZPA Jakarta Dairy cattle imported into Indonesia from Australia and New Zealand must be from farms with an average milk production above 4000 litres per head per lactation, says the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry. It has stipulated that the cattle be of the Friesian or Holstein breed, or other breeds approved by its Gov-

ernment. The exporting farm's milk production has to be certified by the Dairy Board in the case of cattle from New Zealand. Imported dairy cattle have to be at least 16 months and at most 20 months old, and weigh at least 250 kg on having passed quarantine inspection in Indonesia. . Indonesia intends to im-

port 26,000 dairy cattle from the two countries this year. The decision came after complaints by the Indonesian Cattle Breeders’ Association that many imported dairycattle had'performed far below expectation, yielding only three to four litres daily instead of about 20 litres, which it said really good cattle should produce.
