Tax changeover ‘went smoothly’
The October changeover to the new tax codes for P.A.Y.E. had gone smoothly, said the acting district commissioner of Inland Revenue in Christchurch, Mr W- J. Munro.
The new family assistance measures announced in the Budget and changes to the basic rate scale meant that all salary and wage earners had to complete new tax code declarations before October 1. Mr Munro said that before the changeover, the Inland Revenue Department had run an extensive publicity campaign, which included leaflets, posters, and newspaper advertisements. In spite of this, he said, some salary and wage earners had chosen the wrong primary tax code. The errors came.to light when they received their
first pay after October 1. The department had helped people back to the right tax code, and believed the problems had been solved.
Several inquiries were still being made by national superannuitants who wanted to be sure that they were on the right tax code. If a superannuitant did not have a child for whom the family benefit was payable, he or she should be using a G code for the main source of income, and a secondary tax code for all other earnings, said Mr Munro.
Only where there was a child for whom the family benefit was payable could the national superannuitant be eligible for one of the other tax codes, he said.
Any taxpayer with a query on this could get in touch with the Inland Revenue Department.
