Lincoln’s advice

Sir,—The extreme Left never lets up. The fantastic Minto claim about political prisoners in New Zealand would be a great joke were it not for its impact on credulous ears overseas. With world-wide inflation and unemployment our present wage-price freeze deserves at least a fair trial; but when we consider Marsden Point, the boilermakers, meat workers, etc., it seems that the Andersen, Douglas, Thorp group are determined to obstruct it. A local publication contains truths stated by that great humanitarian, Abraham Lincoln, still just as true today. “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help a man permanently by doing for him that which he can and should do for himself.” — Yours, etc., E. MULCOCK. November 24, 1982.
