Surplus rates
Sir,—Surely the Town Clerk must be aware that quite recently Cr Vicki Buck, chairwoman of the council’s finance committee, announced that the council was “looking around for some project” to spend the surplus rates money on? This could be something like more cheap housing for indigent pensioners and superannuitants, whilst those who have struggled for a lifetime to buy their own homes, must struggle even harder to meet the rapa-, cious rate demands of the Christchurch City Council. I agree with your correspondent, A. J. Roberts, that the council’s refusal to return the surplus rates money to ratepayers is nothing more than “legalised theft.” Let us hope that the compulsive spenders on the present council will be ousted at the next elections. An accountant as chairman of the Finance Committee might be a good idea. — Yours, etc..
