Nuclear weapons
Sir,—Recently, our Government has alleged a Soviet threat in the Pacific,' acknowledged growing world tensions, and come to a new agreement with the United States for military, supfly during wartime. Furthermore, the Prime Minister has predicted the likelihood of a glbbal economic collapse within a few years and who nowadays could imagine a collapse without total war? And yet this same Government rubbished the Commission for the Future’s report on nuclear disaster and New Zealand while admitting there are no special civil defence plans for such a contingency. The Commission for the Future’s report dealt with a scenario in which no nuclear weapons actually hit New Zealand and which thus applies to a global economic collapse as well. As Mr Reagan sites MX missiles and welcomes “Death Valley days” we,would do well to consult the Commission's report and its suggestion for a more' independent foreign policy.—Yours, .etc.,
D. K. SMALL. November 24, 1982.
