Russian fishermen leave for Home
; About 250 weary . Russian fishermen left Lyttelton for home yesterday, aboard the pas.senger ship Nikolayevsk.,: . They came from the three Russian fishing boats which have berthed at Lyttelton in the last week — the Kushka, the Mys Osipova, and the Mys Silina. The boats, with fresh crews, have all returned to the fishing .grounds.. The 5236-ton Nikolayevsk, sailing direct from a Black Sea port, arrived at .Lyttelton; on Monday, to ..the ' delight 'of the waiting Russians. -«■ > This is the first time the Russians have made crew changes at Lyttelton. Wellington used to be where They changed over, but now Lyttelton is more practicable, being closer to the fishing grounds. ' Lyttelton - shopkeepers have: had a good week, with up to 500 Russians spending their wages on souvenirs. Local hotels have' also done a roaring trade. Dairies have sold large.quantities of ice-cream and chewing gum. Some Lyttelton residents have been surprised at seeing Russian i women with the crews, but it is. normal practice aboard , Russian vessels to have women crew to do domestic chores. .
Attempts to interview the master of the Nikolayevsk were unsuccessful. Each time “The Press” called at the ship, the master was “in the-city for the day.”
