Railways union angry over TV programme

The Railway Tradesmen’s Association has reacted angrily to a recent "Eyewitness” television news programme about proposals to deregulate land transport. The association’s president, Mr Jack Swift, said that only one side of the argument was presented, in spite of interviews with the president of Federated Farmers and the general secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen.

The interviews shown did not dispel the strong impression conveyed by the programme that railways were a luxury that New Zealand could not afford, said Mr Swift.

“It is not road transport costs that stop New Zealand products being competitive on the overseas markets. There is nothing wrong with the price of our meat or dairy produce, our wool, or coal. The problems that we face are quotas and restrictions overseas,” said Mr Swift. Farmers and manufacturers, who received “massive subsidies,” should not expect their interests to be served at the expense of the livelihoods of thousands of transport workers and at the cost of running down a railway system that served the country well, he said.
