Influence of dollar

Parliamentary reporter

The depreciation of the New Zealand dollar did not add more than 1.3 per. cent to the consumers price index in any quarter, the Minister of Statistics (Mr Falloon) has said.

In an answer-to a written question on the Parliamentary Order Paper, Mr Falloon said that a table of Statistics Department calculations showed that the average percentage increase in the consumers price index for any quarter resulting , from a depreciation in the New Zealand dollar for that or an earlier , quarter, was 0.4 per cent. ' .

A-1.3 per cent increase corresponded with 5 per cent depreciation in the. dollar in the June, 1979, quarter. /’

Depreciation between the June, 1979, quarter and the June, 1982, quarter ranged for each quarter between 1.1 per cent and 1.9 per cent. Mr Falloon said it was not possible to estimate the effect of depreciation on the food price index, but it was believdd to be small.
