P.O. rejects toll plea

Parliamentary reporter

The Post Office is not able to provide a toll-free telephone number in Dunedin for the Poisons Centre, according to the Postmaster-Gen-eral, Mr Talbot. The telephone at the centre had never been tollfree to callers outside the Dunedin toll-free calling area, he said. The Post Office could not provide a number that was universally accessible without a toll charge (where applicable) being charged to either party. As a public servant, the Post Office did provide free of charge two specially prominent listings of the number in every telephone directory — one in the important numbers in the front of the book, and one at the head of listings in the special section for registered medical practitioners.
