Chch cycleway subsidy sought
Money for Christchurch metropolitan area cycleways is sought from the Government's Urban Transport Council grant. The Canterbury United Council's urban ' transport committee wants to allocate $70,000 to. the cycleway network. That would be a 50 per cent subsidy on money already allocated by local bodies for the network. It would be part of $388,500 being sought for transport improvements. Parking and pedestrian facility subsidies of $247,000 are included in the improvements request, with $26,000 for the “Roadshow" road safety project and s4<>,ooo for traffic management capital works. The urban transport committee admits that it is "testing the water" on such sub-
sidies. which would be additional to the $3,122,500 Urban Transport Council allocation expected for public transport operations, and the $151,000 for United Council urban transport planning. Recommended grant payments in those allocations include $2,791,000 for Christ-, church Transport Board operating expenses and $220,500 for board capital spending. Midland Coachlines, Ltd, would receive $68,000 for operating expenses. The Lyttelton Borough Council would receive $28,000 for ferry service operating expenses and $15,000 for capital spending. Transport improvement work will be done by local bodies this year irrespective of whether subsidies are approved.
