Pope honours Italian team
NZPA-Reuter Rome Pope John Paul personally congratulated Italy’s World Cup-winning squad at a Vatican audience yesterday. The team, which won the trophy in Spain three months ago, was told by the Pontiff it had given an “admirable, magnificent display of sportsmanship.” And the team presented the Pope with a silver gilt reproduction of the World Cup.
Earlier the team had been embraced apd kissed by the country’s president, Sandro Pertini, in a festive ceremony and presented with an award.
The players wore blue blazers with three gold stars on their breast pockets, one for each of Italy’s World Cup victories in 1934, 1938 and this year. Most players were made Cavaliers of the Italian Republic while others, including Paulo Rossi and Marco Tardelli who both scored in the final, were created Grand Cavaliers.
The veteran goal-keeper and captain, Dino Zoff, already a Grand Cavalier, was promoted to “Commendatore,” while the side’s manager, Enzo Bearzot, received the highest honour, being appointed Grand Officer of the Republic.
