Obstacles seen to four-term year
PA Wellington Feared disruption to school examination candidates and to secondary teachers' advanced study opportunities could kill proposals for a four-term year in schools.
Talks on a four-term year, favoured by primary school interests, have been’stepped up lately with the reconstitution of an earlier working party to discuss a national trial’.
The Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, seeks an amendment to the Education Act to provide for a fourterm year, if and when the parties now talking want one.
The working party, comprising teacher groups,
school controlling authorities. tertiary education representatives. parent-teacher associations, and the Public Service Association, met again on October 19 but is no further ahead on the trial proposal. The Education Department's assistant secretary of administration. Mr Peter Munn, said no decision has been made on a trial, national or local.
Most of the groups felt they could not commit themselves until presented with specific dates. They will meet again in November, in spite of indications that further talks are fruitless until the primary teachers and boards agree with their secondary counterparts on how the year should be divided.
