Baptist Union centenary
Canterbury Baptists will celebrate the New Zealand centenary of the Baptist Union Assembly on October 29 at the. Opawa Baptist Church. The principal of Spurgeon's College in London. Dr Raymond Brown, will preach at the Canterbury centennial service which will be followed by music and discussion of the past and future role of the Church in New Zealand. The union was formed in 1882 at the initiative of the Hereford Street church, now in Oxford Terrace. It invited Baptist congregations
throughout New Zealand to unite, and had acceptances from 24 churches. Since then others have joined and last year the union recorded its highest net growth in membership. 5.5 per cent. It now comprises about 170 churches. The Baptist Union has been active in social welfare work, and the ecumenical movement, it having been a founder member of the National Council of Churches. It has also developed strong links with the Maori and Chinese communities.
