Rail intake less in 1983

Parliamentary reporter The Railways Corporation expected to take on 180 new apprentices next year, the Minister of Railways, Mr Gair, has told Parliament. The intake will be lower than this year’s by more than 40 apprentices. Lyttelton), Mr Gair said the corporation expected to take on 44 boilermakers, four electricians, 12 electrical fitters. 89 fitters, 25 fitterturners, two motor mechanics, two plumbers, one patternmaker, and one signwriter this year.
