Rail intake less in 1983
Parliamentary reporter The Railways Corporation expected to take on 180 new apprentices next year, the Minister of Railways, Mr Gair, has told Parliament. The intake will be lower than this year’s by more than 40 apprentices. Figures released by Mr Gair in September showed that 224 new apprentices were employed by the Railways Corporation this year, compared with 237 in 1972. The number of new
intakes peaked jn 1978, when 364 apprentices were taken on. and the numbers have dropped each year since then. Replying to a question by Mrs Ann Hercus (Lab.. Lyttelton), Mr Gair said the corporation expected to take on 44 boilermakers, four electricians, 12 electrical fitters. 89 fitters, 25 fitterturners, two motor mechanics, two plumbers, one patternmaker, and one signwriter this year.
