Tanning pills questioned

The Consumers' Institute is concerned about possible side-effects of suntan tablets. The tablets are said to give a golden skin tone, and one report said that they would cut down on sunburn and over-exposure to the sun.

The institute's director. Mr R. J. Smithies, said he was concerned that statements made about the tanning pills could mislead the public.

"The 'tan' produced by the pills gives no protection from sunburn or from ultraviolet radiation that can lead to skin cancer. The pills will reduce risk only if it means a person will then stay out of the sun." he said. A United States Food and Drug Administration report has said that some people become ill and turn more yellow rather than bronze when they take tanning tab-

lets. A Canadian study found that skin can become dry and itchy. "Anyone investing $5O for a course of tanning pills must be aware of the possible side-effects of longterm use. They must not rely on the resultant colour to give them protection when out in the sun. A golden brown tan does not indicate a healthy body." said Mr Smithies.'
