Gang member in critical condition

PA Palmerston North A Mongrel Mob member is reported in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive-care unit after an attack outside a Palmerston North hotel on Saturday night. Mr Norman Campbell, aged about 25 years, of Upper Hutt, underwent surgery in Wellington after being transferred from the Palmerston North hospital with head injuries. The attack occurred at 11.15 p.m. on Saturday when four or five Mongrel Mob members, on leaving the Super Liquorman Hotel in Main Street, were followed down the footpath by a number of men. some armed with lengths of timber. At least two of the Mongrel Mob were struck although Mr Campbell was the only one seriously injured. Another victim was treated for bruising and discharged at the Palmerston North Hospital. The police said that the assailants are thought to have included a number of Pacific Islanders and inquiries are under way to establish their identities. No arrests have been made yet. Three lengths of 3in by 2in timber were recovered from the scene. An iron bar may have been used in the attack also.
