Australia too good

NZPA Melbourne Australia has won the right to represent Oceania at next year’s World Women’s Basketball Championship in Brazil. They defeated New Zealand 64-32 in the second test of the three-game Oceania series at the weekend. The victory followed Australia’s 62-46 win over the Kiwis on Thursday. Australia commanded the game from the beginning and tore the Kiwis’ defence to shreds after switching from zone to man-to-man marking in the second half. The Kiwis had only two players able to fire under

pressure — Leonie Patterson, a tall forward centre of Porirua, and forward Susan Lines of Nelson. The New Zealand guard, Ann McLoughlin, was hit by an elbow in the second half and was unable to carry on. Maree Jackson, centre, of Albury, was the outstanding player of the match with 14 points and nine rebounds. Scorers: Australia 64 (M. Jackson 14, R. Gull 10, K. Foster 10, J. Smithwick 6, K. Ogden 6, S. Deacon 9, T. Cockrem 5, P. Mickan 2, K. Fields 2). New Zealand 32 (L. Patterson 10, L. Pugh 7, L. Wright 6, C. Grey 6, M. Purnell 2, S. Lines 1).
