N.Z. shooting to Harvey
Last year's New Zealand outdoor smallbore, rifle shooting champion. Roger Harvey, of Auckland, switched to the indoor competitions to win the New Zealand indoor championship on Saturday.
The competition was held simultaneously in Christchurch and Wanganui for South Island and North Island ■ marksmen, respectively. Harvey scored possibles on his first two cards, finishing with a total of 598.32 out of the possible 600, an excellent score and one point better than last year’s winning total shot by Rex Davies, of Canterbury. The experienced Christchurch shooter, Ray Mitchell, a national outdoor champion and trialist, held the lead for most of the day on a score of 596.35 with cards of 198.10, 198.12 and 200.13.
Stewart Townshend, of Waimate, dropped four points on the first card but finished superbly with 200.10 and 199.15 to take third place from the national representative, Lindsay Arthur (Hutt).
Christchurch shooters had success in the A and D grades, Jan Beattie winning the A grade by a point and S. Rusbatch gaining the D grade title on a count-back of inner bulls.
