Opera on film

A film of the opera “Tsar and Carpenter,” by Albert Lortzing, will be shown at the Canterbury Museum Theatre on October 13. The film features the Hamburg State Opera, with New Zealand singer, Noel Mangin, playing a role. The comic operas of Lortzing (1801-1851) can be included among the most popular works on the German opera stage. This particular opera was first produced in 1837, and is

based on the belief that Peter the Great, of Russia, in his youth disguised himself as a carpenter to work in the shipyards of Saardam, in the Netherlands, to learn the art of shipbuilding. Upon this historical foundation, Lortzing, who wrote his own libretto, builds a highly unlikely but appealing romantic tale of confusion, as various diplomats and the Burgomaster of Saardam search for their visitor.
