Prison visiting
Sir,—l refer to Kevin Butson’s comments (October 5) on “The Press” article on prison visiting (September 17). It is not correct to say the Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Society puts up a hurdle against former prisoners taking part in prison visiting. Penal institution regulations provide that former inmates wishing to visit must first receive formal approval of the
Secretary for Justice. The Prisoners Aid Society, which includes two former inmates on its local council, makes application for visiting on behalf of former inmates in the event of such application being sought through the society. The society would welcome modification to the present policy of the Justice Department which is hopefully expected as a result of the Penal Policy Review.—Yours, etc., P. B. AUSTIN, president, P.A.R.S., Canterbury and Westland (Inc). October 7, 1982.
