French rugby tour of South Africa
NZPA Paris A decision by the French Rugby Federation to send a team’ to South Africa next year has triggered a strong protest from the main French anti-racism movement. Earlier this week, the federation’s president, Mr Albert Ferrasse confirmed that a French'side would be going to South Africa for a tour next year. Yesterday the Movement against Racism and for Friendship between People (M.R.A.P.) accused Mr Ferrasse of being a propagandist for the South African Government’s apartheid policies. “He has again defied the rights of man. the decisions
of the .United Nations and sporting ethics.” said M.R.A.P. . Mr Ferrasse told a press conference earlier this week: “We are going to go to South Africa. There is no reason why we should break off our relations with a nation which is one of the main forces in rugby,' and with which we have commercial relations. “If the Government stops us — although I cannot see why they should stop rugby when they allow other exchanges, sporting or otherwise — then we would accept, provided they tell us in writing,” he said. Mr Ferrasse said he did not think such a tour would have any effect on the 1984 Olympic Games.
