Cycle race attracts best
NZPA Sydney Eight top British amateur road cyclists, in Australia for the Commonwealth Games, will stay on to compete in the inaugural Great Blue Mountains Bicycle Race on October 23.
They will be among 60 riders entered for the 120 km race, which will run from Penrith to Katoomba ascending the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.
One of the favourites for the race will be Britain’s Malcolm Elliott.
Elliott finished third to Belgian and Polish riders in this year's 770 km Ostend to Manchester race, possibly the world’s toughest amateur road race.
He was also part of the British team which won the team prize in the race, and four members of the team will be with him in the Blue Mountains event.
They are Steve Lawrence, Bob Downs, Joe Waugh, and Jeff Williams.
