Flood fatalities pass 1000
NZPA ' Guatemala City Central America’s death toll in floods brought by a week-long tropical storm stood' at more than 1000 yesterday with the announcement of- more than 500 deaths in Guatemala. The country’s national emergency' committee gave the figure, adding that 10,000 people, mainly poor peasants, had lost their homes while many roads and bridges were swept away by the floods in the wake of
hurricane Olivia. The rains have eased. More than 500 storm deaths have been reported from neighbouring El Salvador, and several in southern Mexico. In Guatemala, many of the dead were reported from round the south-eastern village of . Chiquimillulilla, about 80 km from Guatemala City. Guatemalan officials estimated damage as costing tens of millions of dollars.
