Taranaki to play Southland
PA New Plymouth Taranaki went through the North Island second division rugby championship undefeated when on Saturday it beat King Country. 24-o.' at Rugby Park. Playing in torrential rain and a strong wind. Taranaki scored four tries, a" conversion, and two penalties, as it completely outclassed its opponent. The win means that Taranaki now goes on to play Southland, the winner of the South Island second division. on Tuesday. The winner of this match will meet the bottom first division side. Bay of Plenty, in a pro-motion-relegation match at Tauranga on Saturday.
Taranaki's win came from an outstanding forward performance. Although line-outs' were shared, the Taranaki pack outclassed King Country in all other phases of play. Although ground conditions were slippery, there was a surprising amount of movement among the backs. The half-back. Dave Loveridge - playing his hundredth match for his province — and the full-back, Kieran Crowley, were in good touch for Taranaki, while for King Country, the wing. Dave Flavell, and the inside back. Brian Isaac, played well.
Taranaki scorers: Gavin Wetton (two), Murray: Watts, and Bryce Robins, tries: Kieran Crowley, a conversion and two penalty goals.
