Southland ensures S.I. title with 17-7 win
Southland made sure of the South Island second division rugby championship with a 17-7 win against South Canterbury at Fraser Park. Timaru. on Saturday. Southland, with ’ its All Black centre, Steve Pokere. outstanding on attack, took charge in the first half and led. 10-0. after 26' minutes. However. South Canterbury revived in the third quarter with a try by the wing. Clive Callow, and a dropped goal to close the gap to 10-7 after 15min in the second half. In the final 15 minutes Southland took charge again and a fine try by Alan Monaghan, set 'up 'by the other wing. Kelvin Farrington. made sure of a win. Farrington had joined the line from the blind side and then broke through in midfield.
For Southland. Monaghan (two) and Lex Chisholm scored tries. Brian McKechnie kicked a penalty goal and a conversion.
Callow’s try and a dropped goal by Paul Morris made up South Canterbury's points.
