Coal for Japan through Lyttelton

PA Wellington The Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy and the Jebsen Shipping Group of Norway yesterday signed a contract for the carriage of about 40.000 tonnes of West Coast coal through Lyttelton to Japan. _The sale of the coal to Japanese interests was made earlier this year by the division. It would.be the first shipment of New Zealand coal to Japan to be made on c.i.f. terms, said a Government statement yesterday. The shipment of the coal will be arranged by the New Zealand Shipping ’ Corporation. which won the contract in association with Jebsen. The statement said the corporation was close to reaching an agreement with Jebsen to allow New Zealanders to man and manage a 35.000-ton bulk vessel.
