Holmdale to visit Raoul

The Chathams trader Holmdale will make her annual voyage to Raoul Island on September 20. The vessel carries fuel, food, and equipment to the New Zealanders working on the Island, the northernmost island of the Kermadec group, lying about 966 km north-east of Auckland. Eleven Metereological Service staff. Forest Service goat cullers, and Lands and survey Department research staff were stationed on the

island, said a Ministry of Transport spokesman. This year the 911-ton Holmdale will not carry any replacement staff to the island. That will be done by the Royal New Zealand Navy survey ship Monowai. which will collect four Metereological Service replacement staff from Tonga. They should arrive at Raoul Island early next month. . Previously, replacement staff have stayed in makeshift accommodation, usually

a converted container, aboard the Holmdale. Because of the island's rough terrain, the Holmdale will carry a helicopter to ferry the 150 tonnes of supplies. including a big quantity of fuel, to the island. The Holmdale which is due at Lyttelton today, will sail for Wellington on Wednesday. She will load supplies there until September 20, when she will begin her 3*2day voyage to Raoul Island.
