Vandalism a worry at old Darfield Hall
Vandalism was a continual problem at the old Darfield Memorial Hall on South Terrace. the Malvern County Council was told last week. Windows were being broken, and people were using an adjoining toilet block although it was not connected to a water supply, the council heard. The hall cannot be demolished until a new home is found for the library, which stands alongside. The County Chairman. Mr G. E. Wright.' said discussions were still to be held with County Library Service staff. Many suggestions had been made about what to do. but the problem was unresolved. Tbe County Clerk. Mr B. W. Perrin, said after the meeting that all county library services would have to be discussed. This would have a bearing on the type of new library in Darfield. to replace one run by a volunteer committee. Names
The council passed a special order to allow historical tracks in the county which have been named
roads to revert to their former titles. Members were told that an elderlv resident had noted road signs for Wards Road, which historicallv was known as Wards Track. The same applied to Leaches Track. Cr G. E. J. Hutton said Wards Track-was a part of the county's history. Grants A move by Cr A. D. H. Scott to have'a $5OO grant to the Greendale Golf Glut transferred to the Darfield Scout Group was lost. Cr Scott said the scouts were looking after the young of the area, and he felt they should receive a grant. But Cr R. H. While said the Darfield scouts had had grants in the last two years. The Torlesse Scout Group would get $2OO this year. Cr Hutton said an application by the golf club for a grant last year had been declined. This year the executive committee had considered carefully who should receive grants. Cr I. P. Chamberlain said there was not enough money
for evervone. and the executive committee's recommendation should stand. Grants totalling ' $6250 were made to:' Courtenay Tennis Club. $400: Darfield Indoor Bowling Club. $200; Darfield Netball Club. $500; Darfield Twilight Softball Club. $150; Greendale Golf Club. $500: Malvern Deerstalkers' Association. $500: Malvern Gym club. $550: Malvern Education Institute. $750: Sheffield Memorial Swimming Baths. $700; Sheffield Women's Hockey Club. $100; South Malvern Netball Club. $1000; Springfield Indoor Bowls. $200; Torlesse Scout Group. $200: Windwhistle Play Group. $200; Darfield Tennis Club. $3OO. Fluoridation The council decided against introducing fluoridation into the Darfield water supply because of the cost. The matter was shelved. Loan
A special order was made by the council to raise a rural housing loan of $lOO,OOO.
