Defence report

Sir,—Whatever benefits A.N.Z.U.S. may have for New Zealand, immunity from nuclear attack can hardly be counted among them. The Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) is surely mistaken when he states in the recently published Ministry of Defence Report to Parliament (page 6), that United States warships visiting our ports “do not bring with them the slightest risk of nuclear attack” because they “are not part of the strategic deterrent.” It is misleading of the Minister to suggest that in the event of hostilities nuclear strikes would be made only against strategic targets, when the United States Navy itself deploys countless tactical nuclear weapons for use against all sorts of targets. If A.N.Z.U.S. were invoked, of course New Zealand could suffer nuclear attack. Who ever heard of a war in which some belligerents and some warships were liable to be attacked, but not others?—Yours, etc., H. C. EVISON. September 2, 1982.
