Aid for parents

Babies Need Books. By Dorothy Butler. Pelican, 1982 (reprinted), 190 pp. $5.95 (paperback). Now' available in paperback, this valuable book by an Auckland bookseller and author will be more readily available to those who can make the best use of it. The book is summed up in its subtitle: "How to share the joy of reading with your child.” The author believes that the only hope for really living with enjoyment, during one’s children’s early years, is consciously to choose to be actively involved in child rearing. Her book is an aid for parents' and others to do this. In addition to some rationale on why babies need books, she provides an excursion through the world of books for the first six years of childhood. With Dorothy Butler as a guide, this is fun as well as informative.—Alison Neale.
