Experience of horrors
Sir.—Your leader page today (August 25) has two items concerning human exposure to horrors. Professor Taylor talks of psychological debriefing for Erebus recovery workers, but those experiencing the Nazi holocaust and the forgiven Japanese atrocities have survived without treatment. I saw mangled bodies after air raids on London, but police and other workers saw much worse. While the Erebus workers had a harrowing experience, I had to recover bits of close friends after a flying boat exploded on take-off. On patrol, we counted over 300 bodies in life-jackets floating off Zululand after a ship carrying Italian prisoners of war was torpedoed. The South African authorities refused to allow recovery of the bodies, permitting the local natives to loot and bury them on the beach. One I found was so dealt with, an officer taking the identification papers and burning them. I have not been debriefed yet.—Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON. August 25, 1982.
