100km track race

Some of the best ultra-, distance runners in Australia and New Zealand will compete in a 100 km track race at Queen Elizabeth II Park today. They will attempt to break the New Zealand all-comers’ record of 7hr 17min set by a former Christchurch runner, Roger Alcorn, and Alcorn's 50-mile record of 5:22.29. The leading entrants are Auckland's Gary Regtien, who last year set a world

record of 255.041 km for 24 hours of running; Tom Gillis, the winner of the 198ffiSymon and Lowther 100 km race and several other important ul-tra-distance races in both New Zealand and Australia; John Souter (Timaru), the New Brighton 50-mile titleholder; and the Christchurch trio, of Don Cameron, Stu Hill and Don Mitchell, all of whom are experienced distance runners. The race will start at 7 a.m.
