Effects of strikes
Sir,—Newspapers report the spectacular effects of ferry workers and railway shunters’ strikes, but they do not detail the enormous cost and misery to the public, nor the cost to the Railways Corporation. Stoppages to Cook Strait transport damage South Island trade, its viability' and its credibility. Is the press afraid to deal with the subject of industrial relations when unions are at fault? Could they for example explain to their readers why it is that a few irresponsible people are able to cause such enormously costly damage and misery without being accountable in law, as employers are? The public at large do not understand why this privileged anachronism can be used to destroy our nation’s wealth. Who will inform them?—Yours, etc., G. W. HUNT. August 18, 1982.
