L.P.G.
Sir, — The questions asked by me (August 11) were really not answered by the Harbour Board and the Lyttelton Borough Council. The National Roads Board gave a reasonable explanation. In “The Press,” on August 13, the Lyttelton Borough Council’s witness, Mr Williamson, stated “The transport and storage of large quantities of L.P.G. near populated areas introduces the potential for catastrophic mishaps". He also stated, “If released, L.P.G. rapidly vaporised to a highly flammable and explosive gas, and near a populated area, many deaths and injuries could result”. At the Christchurch City Council discussions, representatives of several organisations stated at L.P.G. is safe. It would appear that there is much conflict over the safety of L.P.G. I am informed that L.P.G. tankers go through the Mersey Tunnel -in England in convoy. Why not do the same through the Lyttelton Road Tunnel? The Siimner residents still have reason to question
the transportation of L.P.G over Evans Pass. — Yours, etc B. R. HANSEN. ’ August 19. 1982.
