Women’s squash test

Once again Susan Devoy scored New Zealand’s only success when Australia completed an unbeaten record in the threetest junior women’s squash series at the Christchurch club last evening.. . Miss Devoy overcame Tracy Smith, the Australian junior champion; in an entertaining four-game encounter that lasted 44min. That gave her a 2-1 advantage in the series. The 18-year-old ■ Victorian showed grand touch on the backhand and some hard low driving, but she was obviously unhappv' with the way many refereeing decisions went. Miss Devoy took control, in the fourth with winning drops up front on both wings. None of the other New Zealanders managed to win a game although all had their moments. The New Zealand No. 2, Julie Keen, retrieved superblv in the early stages against' Wendy Williams and continually dug the ball out of the corners, but the. long rallies' seemed' to exhaust her energy. Miss Williams, the

team captain, and another Victorian. was always eager to volley and she played one lovely overhead cross-court for a dead nick to take the first game. In the battle between the number threes. Robyn Fridav. from Perth, turned on the power to eclipse Stephanie Young in the third game. Miss Young had shown a vast improvement to all but take the second game after some fine touch and deception and better anticipation. Burnside’s Susan Wasley used up all her form in the first game against Robyn Belford when she played good'tight stuff down the walls and hit some delicate winning boasts and drops. At 8-8 in the first Miss Wasley's run ended and from then on loose returns of serve often put her on the defensive. .<
