Israel backs plan
The Israeli Government has endorsed the Americaninspired plan to remove Palestinian guerrillas from Beirut, the Army radio has reported. It said that the decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting yesterday. The evacuation plan, drawn up by the American mediator, Mr Philip Habib, contains a precise timetable for the withdrawal of the estimated 7000 guerrillas. The guerrillas, who have been under Israeli siege for almost 10 weeks, are expected to start leaving at the
week-end. The radio also quoted Israeli officials as saying that they hoped a kidnapped soldier would be freed at the same time as an Israeli pilot who had been in P.L.O. hands since the first week of the Lebanon war. Israeli newspapers said that the soldier was held up at gunpoint by P.L.O. fighters and disarmed. Other Israeli troops who saw the incident appealed through loudspeakers for the P.L.O. to release him, said the newspaper “Yediot Ahronot.” Further reports, Page 6
