Southern ski clubs reap rewards
Although 70 per cent of New Zealand’s ski clubs are in the North Island, there is more activity and sounder organisation down south. • That message is implicit in the New Zealand Ski Association’s distribution of funds from a $6500 Sports and Recreation grant. The North Island (50 affiliated clubs) will receive only 52400 while $4lOO goes to the South Island (21 clubs). The Canterbury Ski Association, which has the biggest regional grant of $2OOO, has had a pal on the' back from N.Z.S.A.’s president, Mr Athol Lonsdale, w’ho said in a letter that its report on 1981 activities was “very comprehensive and in-
formative, indicating a great deal of planning and organisation.” Other grants were: the Ruapehu Mountain Clubs Association ($1900), the Southern Districts Ski Association ($1800), Taranaki Association Mountain Clubs ($500) and the Nelson Ski Club ($300). Eighteen clubs have their headquarters in Auckland city and a further 10 in Wellington, and Mr Lonsdale said that the potential existed for better organisation. More money might be available next year and Mr Lonsdale is hopeful that will stimulate some of the regions into "getting their acts into gear."
