S.I. junior ski-ing
Nearly 100 facers competed for the six age-group titles when the South Island junior ski-ing championships were held at Lake Ohau last week-end.
New Zealand's premier junior ski-ing event was a national points race for the first time and entrants had a chance fo improve their seedings for the national championships next month.
Wakatipu, Southland, and Porter Heights emerged as the top clubs on points with the last named retaining the Wilson Neill Trophy for the fifth vear in a row.
The -steep terrain and high standard of the courses set by the coaches. Noel Dufty (Canterbury Ski Association) and Diane Culver (Southern Districts), called for good line and technique. Nicholas Boyer (Queenstown), aged 12. scorched through the testing giant slalom course nearly 4s faster than the under--15 champion. Clinton GentryNott (also Queenstown). Annalise Cobefger cleared out from her opposition in the under--11 girls’ giant slalom by a total of 9s over the two runs. However, she was disqualified in the slalom event and the combined title went to another Porter Heights skier, Alice Gilroy. Canterbury girls featured in the three combined titles with
Rachel Scott (Methven) emerging by two points over-all from Juliet Satterthwaite • (Porter Heights) to win the Spalding Gold Cup. Adele Coberger took the under-13 girls’ title from a field of 16 keen racers. The slalom on the Saturday was run with light snow falling, but reasonable visibility; however. Sunday produced fine weather and firm snow conditions for the giant slalom.
