Trade with Chile

Sir,—lnsofar as the trade ban with Chile highlighted the action of the C.I.A. in overthrowing a legitimatelyelected, satisfactory government in another country, the trade ban oh Chile was neither “futile” nor "silly” (editorial, August 9). As for hurt to New Zealand, even Mr Muldoon at one stage allegedly put “morality” before “national interest” when he pursued an Olympic boycott. The example of other countries has not influenced us in other areas, which have also involved loss of millions in potential trade. I refer specifically to the fact 'that England “recognised” China long before America did, but we followed America. Again Australia is, I believe, one of over 100 countries that has recognised North Korea (D.P.R. Korea), but we have not. We. are influenced by America, and as in the case of China, accept America’s assessment, which in the case of China proved inaccurate.— Yours, etc., B. K. ROBERTS. August 9, 1982.
