Boxing tourney
Two members of the Canterbury boxing team, Paul Graham and Nicky Craig, will compete in the Barry’s Gymnasium tournament at the Hillsborough Tavern this evening. Graham and Craig have been matched against .wellperformed opponents in a bid to help them prepare for the national championships at Wellington later this month. especially slick in winning an intermediate title and. extending a record of only three losses from more than 30 contests.
A lack of opponents prevented Craig (Papanui) from taking part in the provincial championships, but he will have a stern challenge from Eric Smith, of Grey mouth, It is possible that other boxers will qualify for the national tournament arid earn travel sponsorships from their gymasiums if successful this evening. Robert Campbell (Barry’s) is in this category, and he will face’'? Alex Faimalo (Woolston), . ’ ; The tournament —: the first mid-week matching for some years, and Only the second to be held on licensed premises — will also mark the selection of Kevin Barry, jun., in the Commonwealth Games squad.
