Mice incident upsets S.P.C.A.
The protesters who threw live mice on to the Merivale Mall stage during a "Miss Canterbury" parade on Saturday will have the “Riot Act read to them" if they can be identified, said the chairman .of the Canterbury branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr M. G. Coulbeck, yesterday. • Mr Coulbeck said that the society was concerned that if the protesters got away with throwing mice, children might think that they too could abuse animals. “A mouse is an animal.
and it does have feelings. It is our policy to protect animals. so jve must clamp down on any cruelty." he said. If it wished the society could take legal action for cruelty under the Animals Protection Act, but on this occasion the offenders would probably "have the Riot Act read to them" if they could be traced. “I know people will say ‘well, they're only mice.’ but there are some people you .might say don't deserve to live. too. but you just can't do this sort of thing,” said Mr Coulbeck.
