Sports contacts
Sir,—Since taking over as Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Cooper has taken every opportunity to rationalise his Government’s shameful record on sporting contacts ■ with South Africa. The Wimbledon championships, to which Mr Cooper refers (“The Press," August 5) are for individuals and not countries and therefore not covered by the letter of the Gleneagles Agreement. If all countries abided by sanctions voted fbr at the United Nations or the Commonwealth, apartheid would be a memory. And Mr Cooper’s Government, in its quest for the rural vote, leads the world in its cynical disregard of international agreements to suit current political needs. — Yours, etc..
GRAEME YARDLEY August 5, 1982.
