Carnival opening for new mall
A three-hour community carnival marked the official opening of Christchurch’s City Mall oh Saturday. Several thousand people enjoyed the gala atmosphere created by bands, morris dancers, raffles, chocolate wheels, a Noddy train, and more than 40 stalls,
The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, unveiled a commemorative plaque, and planted a tree to mark the event. Guests included the member of Parliament for Christchurch Central, Mr G. W. R. Palmer; Sir Hamish told guests that the opening was import-
ant in the history of Christchurch as it represented the culmination of 16 years planning. , • . The City Mall project had been a notable example of city business co-operation, said Sir Hamish. Christchurch’s central areas must be kept alive and interesting
so that people would want to come to them rather than always shopping in suburban areas, he said. The new pedestrian mall takes in Cashel Street from High Street to the Bridge of Remembrance, and High Street from Hereford Street to Cashel Street.
