Nurse to serve in west Beirut
A Christchurch nurse. Miss Olwyn Gillespie, will leave this afternoon to join a Save the Children Fund team in war-torn west Beirut. Miss Gillespie, who until March was part of a Save the Children Fund team in Somalia, will fly first to London for a briefing on her new task. She expects to be away about four months.
"1 am looking forward to it as I enjoy working with ' children,” she said yesterday. “I don’t really know as yet the type of work it will be, but there is probably a lot of surgical nursing.” ■ As well as Somalia, she has also worked for the Fund in northern Uganda, and for the Red Cross in Kampuchea.
Meanwhile. there is danger of an epidemic in West Beirut because of inadequate water supplies, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency has reported to Corso. “More refugees are crowding into the central part of west Beirut as a result of renewed fighting on the
southern outskirts of the city, with displaced families squatting even in cinemas,” said a telex. A Corso appeal for wes' Beirut raised more tha. $3OOO in the first week. Donations may be sent to Corso. Box 9716, Wellington or taken to a National Bank.
