Swiss skiers to race in giant slalom today

Although the ace Swiss men's downhill team did not arrive in New Zealand until late on Saturday evening it will compete in the Subaru giant slalom when the Europa F;I.S. ski-ing series enters its second week at Mount Hutt today. World-ranked ski-ing stars such as Peter Mueller, Peter Luescher, and Urs Raeber are all in the first seed of 15 for the giant slalom which .has attracted a huge entry. of 90 runners from 12 countries.

Sixty-three of the entrants have F.I.S. (Federation Internationale de Ski) points and 24 of them have points below 50. ' .. '

The first seed is made up of the three Swiss, nine Italians, a Canadian (Jim Read), and two Norwegians.

-Italy's Bruno Nockler, starting No. 4 through the gates, has the lowest seeding points with 8.95, and next come Alex Giorgi (Italy), 11.91, Peter Luescher (Switzerland), 13.39, Paul-Arne Skajem (Norway), 13.60, Odd Soerli (Norway), 14.82, and Ivano Edalini (Italy), 18.49. Luescher is the best known in the top seed, as a former World Cup holder and obviously a great all-rounder. The Swiss, primarily downhillers, arrived from Australia too late for the races in their specialist discipline, but have considerable talent in both giant slalom and slalom and will add lustre to those events..

Only 13 ■ racers have entered the Subaru women’s slalom and only five of them have F.I.S. points, the lowest

being a member of the Dutch A team. Katusha Esser, on 53.13. New' Zealand’s Kate Rattray will have the honour of being first through the gates. A more interesting line-up is in prospect for the second of the women's international giant slaloms tomorrow when the United States team will make its first appearance. Tamara McKinney, the 1980-81 World Cup women’s giant slalom champion, and Christin Cooper, thia silver medallist in the giant slalom in the 1982 world alpine championships at Schladming, will be among the entrants.

The women’s giant slalom runs are timed for 9.45 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. today and the men’s runs for 10.30 a.m. and 1.45 p.m.
